International Students Activities

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND THEIR PALS

The week of April 13, the International Pal Program began at the University of Viña del Mar. The program unites the international exchange students with Chilean UVM students. This initial introduction will continue as a repertoire throughout the semester giving the students the chance to exchange language, culture and other areas of common interest.

On Friday, April 17, the international students visited the Chilean National Congress in Valparaíso. They were given an exclusive tour of the building that is not available to most visitors. They were allowed onto the floors of both the Camara de Diputados (the House of Representatives), and the Senate. They were also shown chambers such as where the President is awarded their sash. During the tour, they learned about Chile’s system of governance, elections and legislature. This was an opportune time for them to learn about this, as Chile is holding their presidential election later this year.

On Saturday, April 18, the University of Viña del Mar’s international students went on a picnic and canopying trip in the Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden is a large, lush national park on the outskirts of Viña del Mar. The sunny weather was perfect for a picnic, and the students each brought food to contribute. They snacked on an assortment of bananas, tortillas, sandwiches, peanut butter, chips and juice. After they finished eating, several of the students participated in a pick-up soccer game, which is a very popular sport in Chile.
The students then took a walk through the forest to the canopying area, which is a course with zip-lines, hanging rope bridges, wooden tubes and ladders placed at various heights through the trees. The students donned helmets and harnesses, and were given a talk on safety before zooming off along the first zip-line. For those afraid of heights, it was a chance to challenge themselves to overcome their fear. The students had a great time posing for the camera as they crawled through the hanging wooden tubes, hung out on wooden platforms and carefully stepped one foot in front of the other across the precarious bridges.
